Mercedes chief strategist James Woles shared his opinion on the factors that allowed the German team to successfully perform at the Mexican Grand Prix.
In Mexico City, the Mercedes drivers took 2nd and 4th places and were able to get ahead of the competition from Ferrari in the race.
Many factors contributed to this performance. First, back in Austin, we have prepared a substantial package of updates to the car, which allowed the team to take a step forward. This was especially noticeable at the stage in Mexico.
Secondly, we have always been good in conditions where both we and our competitors have to use the settings with the maximum level of downforce. This became clear after the races in Zandvoort, and in Budapest, and now in Mexico City, where everyone tuned the rear wings to the maximum level of downforce.
As for the chances at the stages in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, it is too early to judge this. But I do not think that we will be as competitive there as at the last Grand Prix. The difference will be small, but a small step back in speed is possible.
I also believe that the Ferrari will be much closer there compared to the stage in Mexico. Yes, the track in Brazil is also located quite high - at around 700 meters above sea level, but another factor will be the configuration of the track itself. Our car works well on tracks with a high level of downforce, but in the case of the track in Brazil, this is not entirely the case, said Woles.
